Stephen King, The Institute

Zwischendurch ging mir der Lesestoff aus und mir war nach noch etwas von Stephen King, da traf es sich ganz gut, dass der Band schon wieder drei Jahre zurück lag, so dass er gut wiedergelesen werden konnte. Auch beim Wiederlesen war das Buch so spannend wie beim ersten Mal, und ebenso bedrückend, wie realistisch das Unvollstellbare trotzdem immer wieder wirkt.

Ein neuer King ist immer ein wahres Fest für mich und dieses Buch war wieder so packend und faszinierend, dass ich es kaum aus der Hand legen mochte und es sicher noch einige Male wiederlesen werde. Besonders die Konstruktion von dem Buch im Buch und wie King sie für den finalen Twist am Ende benutzt (auf den ich natürlich voll reinfiel) ist genial.

He started writing Benjy's story on a laptop he's pretty sure (no, positive) has been cloned because it was a challenge, and because it's that fabled last job, but he now understands there was a deeper, truer reason: he wants to be read. By anyone, even a couple of Vegas hardballs like Nick Marjarian and Giorgio Piglielli. Now he understands - he never did before, never even considered it - that any writer who goes public with his work is courting danger. It's part of the allure. Look at me. I'm showing you what I am. My clothes are off. I'm exposing myself.

He thinks writing is also a kind of war, one you fight with yourself. The story is what you carry and every time you add to it, it gets heavier.
All over the world there are half-finished books - memoirs, poetry, novels, surefire plans for getting thin or getting rich - in desk drawers, because the work got too heavy for the people trying to carry it and they put it down.

Did you know that could happen? Did you know that you could sit in front of a screen or a pad of paper and change the world? It doesn't last, the world always comes back, but before it does, it's awesome. It's everything.

Hoff with a glass of wine, Billy with a diet soda, Hoff broadcasting a slightly desperate vibe even then. Although along with it, like a fraternal twin, was the mindset that had gotten him in so much trouble and was about to get him in even more. It was the core belief, maybe inculcated in childhood, that he was the star of a movie called 'The Fabulous Life of Ken Hoff', and no matter how bad things got, in the end he would come out with the girl, the gold watch, and everything.

Stephen King, If It Bleeds

Die Titelstory überflog ich diesmal nur, aber "Mr Harrigan's Phone" und die Trilogie um Chuck Krantz standen schon eine Weile auf meiner Wiederlesensliste und gingen mir wieder richtig nahe. Das letzte Wiederlesen war es mit Sicherheit nicht.

Stephen King, Bazaar of Bad Dreams

Auch um diese Kurzgeschichtensammlung kam ich irgendwie nicht rum. Meine Favoriten hier sind - nach wie vor - "The Dune", "Morality", "Afterlife", "Ur", "Herman Wouk is still alive", Mister Yummy", "The Little Green God of Agony", "Obits", "Drunken Fireworks" und "Summer Thunder". Wobei die anderen natürlich auch immer wieder schön sind. Aber vielleicht nicht ganz so gut.

Stephen King, The Langoliers/Four Past Midnight

Zurzeit kann ich mich nicht von Stephen Kings Kurzgeschichten, egal wie lang, losreißen. Auf die anderen Stories in Four Past Midnight hatte ich allerdings diesmal keine große Lust, außer einigen Passagen aus 'The Library Policeman'. Die Langoliers allerdings überzeugten einmal mehr wieder, trotz des xten Wiederlesens und obwohl die Story schon über 30 Jahre alt ist. Was man ihr aber kaum anmerkt.

Stephen King, Full Dark, No Stars

Obwohl ich "1922" immer noch nicht wiederlesen wollte (ich weiß auch nicht genau, was mich an der Story stört, aber irgendwie mag ich sie nicht), faszinierten "Big Driver", "A good Marriage" und "Fair Extension" dafür einmal mehr. Und bestimmt nicht zum letzten Mal.

Stephen King, Nightmares and Dreamscapes

Auch hier pickte ich mir nur einige Geschichten raus und las den Rest quer - oder garnicht, wie z.b. "Sorry, Right Number", das mir einfach zu traurig ist. Dafür war das Wiederlesen von "Dolan's Cadillac", "The Night Flier", "Chattery Teeth", "Dedication", "Sneakers", "Home Delivery", "My Pretty Pony", "The Ten O'Clock People", "The House on Maple Street" und "The Doctor's Case" noch einmal mehr ein echtes Vergnügen.
