Terry Pratchett, Equal Rites

.
.
They both savoured the strange warm glow of being much more ignorant than ordinary people, who were ignorant of only ordinary things.
.
'There were more old people. The world was full of them,' said the wizard.
'Yes, I know. And now it's full of young people. Funny, really. I mean, you'd expect it to be the other way around.'
.
(Terry Pratchett, Equal Rites, 1987)

.
.
Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man

Oh well.
.
Everything that exists, yearns to live. That's what the cycle of life is all about. That's the engine that drives the great biological pumps of evolution. Everything tries to inch its way up the tree, clawing or tentacling or sliming its way up the next niche until it gets to the very top - which, on the whole, never seems to have been worth all that effort.
.
'Hang on though,' said the Bursar, who had managed to catch up with events. 'Why should that worry us? We don't have anything to fear from the dead, do we? After all, they're just people who are dead. They're just ordinary people. People like us.'
.
Contrary to general belief, Bill Door wasn't very familiar with funereal decor. Deaths didn't normally take place in tombs, except in rare and unfortunate cases. The open air, the bottoms of rivers, halfway down sharks, any amount of bedrooms, yes - tombs, no.
.
Was that what it was really like to be alive? The feeling of darkness dragging you forward?
How could they live with it? And yet they did, and even seemed to find enjoyment in it, when surely the only sensible course would be to despair. Amazing. To feel you were a tiny living thing, sandwiched between two cliffs of darkness. How could they stand to be alive?
.
Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.
.
(Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man, 1991)

Terry Pratchett, The Last Continent

How could you ever make any progress against minds like that? If some god somewhere had said, 'Let there be light,' they'd be the ones to say things like 'Why?' The darkness has always been good enough for us.'
.
I THINK PERHAPS YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND. PEOPLE'S WHOLE LIVES DO PASS IN FRONT OF THEIR EYES BEFORE THEY DIE. THE PROCESS IS CALLED 'LIVING'.
.
Historians have pointed out that it is in times of plenty that people feel like going to war. In times of famine they're simply trying to find enough to eat. When they've just enough to go round they tend to be polite. But when a banquet is spread before them, it's time to argue over the place settings.
.
(Terry Pratchett, The Last Continent, 1998)

.
.
Terry Pratchett, The Light Fantastic
.
.
Boring, it thought. What a strange thing to say. Trees can be bored, of course, beetles do it all the time, but I don't think that was what he was trying to mean.
,
From here it also looks a great deal bigger, because space is not really big, it is simply somewhere to be big in. Planets are big, but planets are meant to be big and there is nothing clever about being the right size.
.
(Terry Pratchett, The Light Fantastic, 1986)

Terry Pratchett, Sourcery

Immer wieder gut.

Despite rumour, Death isn't cruel - merely terribly, terribly good at his job.
.
It wasn't lost. It always knew exactly where it was. It was always here.
It was just that everywhere else seemed to have been temporarily mislaid.
.
'Talent just defines what you do,' he said. 'It doesn't define what you are. Deep down, I mean. When you know what you are, you can do anthing.'
.
(Terry Pratchett, Sourcery, 1988)

Terry Pratchett, The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents
.

It went against everything a cat stood for. This is what thinking does for you, he thought. It gets you into trouble. Even when you know other people can think for themselves, you start thinking for them too.
.
He wasn't exactly lost, because cats never got lost. He merely didn't know where everything else was.
.
'I suppose there isn't a Big Cat in the Sky, is there?'
I'M SURPRISED AT YOU, MAURICE. OF COURSE THERE ARE NO CAT GODS. THAT WOULD BE TOO MUCH LIKE ... WORK.
Maurice nodded. One good thing about being a cat, apart from the extra lives, was that the theology was a lot simpler.
.

Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms

.
.
He could think in italics. Such people need watching.
Preferably from a safe distance.
.
There were no such thing as dwarf gods. Dwarfs were not a naturally religious species, but in a world where pit props could crack without warning and pockets of fire damp could suddenly explode they'd seen the need for gods as the sort of supernatural equivalent of a hard hat. Besides, when you hit your thumb with an eight-pound hammer it's nice to be able to blaspheme.
.
The Librarian was, of course, very much in favour of reading in general, but readers in particular got on his nerves. There was something, well, sacrilegious about the way they kept taking books off the shelves and wearing out the words by reading them. He liked people who loved and respected books, and the best way to do that, in the Librarian's opinion, was to leave them on the shelves where Nature intended them to be.
.
He was vaguely aware that prospective grooms were not supposed to see putative brides on the morning of the wedding, possibly in case they took to their heels.
.
(Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms, 1993)

.
Terry Pratchett, Thud

.
Fun. What is it good for?
It's not pleasure, joy, delight, enjoyment or glee. It's a hollow, cruel, vicious little bastard, a word for something sought with an hilarious couple of wobbly antennae on your head and the word 'I want it!' on your shirt, and it tends to leave you waking up with your face stuck to the street.
.

Terry Pratchett, Jingo

Sergeant Colon had had a broad education. He'd been to the School of My Dad Always Said, the College of It Stands to Reason, and was now a postgraduate student at the University of What Some Bloke In The Pub Told Me.
.
It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was Us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
.
Night poured over the desert. It came suddenly, in purple. In the clear air, the stars drilled down out of the sky, reminding every thoughtful watcher that it is in the deserts and high places that religions are generated. When men see nothing but bottomless infinity over their heads they have always had a driving and desperate urge to find someone to put in the way.
.
One of the universal rules of happiness is: always be wary of any helpful item that weighs less than its operating manual.
.
(Terry Pratchett, Jingo, 1997)

.
.
Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!

.
'.. Never trust any ruler who puts his faith in tunnels and bunkers and escape routes. The chances are that his heart isn't in the job.'
.

Terry Pratchett, Nightwatch

Spannung pur.

'... Don't put your trust in revolutions. They always come around again. That's why they're called revolutions. People die, and nothing changes...
.
As soon as you saw people as things to be measured, they didn't measure up. What would run through the streets soon enough wouldn't be revolution or a riot. It'd be people who were frightened and panicking. It was what happened when the machinery of city life faltered, the wheels stopped turning and all the little rules broke down. An when that happened, humans were worse than sheep. Sheep just ran; they didn't try to bite the sheep next to them.
.
(Terry Pratched, Night Watch, 2002)

Terry Pratchett, Feet of Clay

'You know, sometimes I envy you. It must be nice to be a wolf. Just for a while.'
'It has its drawbacks.' Like fleas, she thought, as they locked up the museum. And the food. And the constant nagging feeling that you should be wearing three bras at once.
.
Rumour is information distilled so finely that it can filter through anything. It does not need doors and windows - sometimes it doesn't even need people. It can exist free and wild, running from ear to ear without ever touching lips.
.
'They think they want good government and justice for all, Vimes, yet what is it they really crave, deep in their hearts? Only that things go on as normal and tomorrow is pretty much like today.
.
Royalty was like dandelions. No matter how many heads you chopped off, the roots were still there underground, waiting to spring up again.
It seemed to be a chronic disease. It was as if even the most intelligent person had this little blank spot in their heads where someone had written: 'Kings. What a good idea.' Whoever had created humanity had left in a major design flaw. It was its tendency to bend at the knees.
.

Terry Pratchett, The Truth

.
'Be careful. People like to be told what they already know. Remember that. They get uncomfortable when you tell them new things. New things ... well, new things aren't what they expect. The like to know that, say, a dog will bite a man. That is what dogs do. They don't want to know that a man bites a dog, because the world is not supposed to happen like that. In short, what people think they want is news, but what they really crave is olds. I can see you've got the hang of it already.'
.
