In diesem Band befand sich die Szene, die ich gesucht hatte (in der McGee einem gierigen Bestattungsunternehmer im wahrsten Sinn des Wortes einen Strich durch die Rechnung macht) und auch der Rest der Story kam beim lesen wieder und war wie zu Erwarten der reinste Genuß. Ich denke, alle noch folgenden Bände werde ich nicht lesen, aber vielleicht noch zwei oder drei.

Joe R. Lansdale, Born for Trouble - The Further Adventures of Hap and Leonard

Endlich wieder neuer Stoff von diesem einmaligen Duo, wurde auch zeit. Zur Hälfte kannte ich die Stories, wie Briar Patch Boogie und Cold Cotton, in dieser neuen Sammlung zwar schon, aber zähle sie trotzdem als neu, weil ich mich kaum noch an sie erinnern konnte. Dazu ein paar neue Stories - vor allem Hodoo Harry gefiel mir sehr - und ein Vorwort von Lansdale über seine spezielle Beziehung zu seinen "Boys" und was es mit ihrem Alter und Lebensumständen auf sich hat. Da hatte ich auch schon einige Male drüber gegrübelt und Lansdales Erklärung scheint mir bis jetzt die sinnvollste, und auch eine die sich auf alle Serienfiguren anwenden lässt.

A note. This really should go without saying, but some readers say, "Well, wouldn't they be old by now? Unable to do what they do?"
In reality they would be slightly older than me. And I am no spring chicken. Though I'm spry. But here's the thing - as real as they seem to me, they have a different relationship with time than the rest of us.
I let them age, but I have never done it on a year-by-year basis. Like Travis McGee, Philip Marlowe, James Bond, and numerous other fictional characters, they move at a different pace and have multiple adventures that no living person might have in a lifetime, or two.
I consider a year when I do not write about them to be a year in which they remain, timewise, in amber. When I return to them, or they return to me, the clock starts again, though I don't worry if it's the year it should be after their last adventure. If I wait eight years between novels, or what have you, they are only slightly older than when I ceased writing about them eight years before. Their current adventure will take place in the current year, which means they do not maintain a realistic chronology. I may even decide to write about them when they are younger, or middle-aged. I get to chose.
Some folks are really bugged by this. I'm not sure why, but they are. It pops up in a lot of discussions. At the same time, this approach is one that has been around forever; story heroes are not necessarily subject to the ticking of the clock.

John D. MacDonald, Pale Grey for Guilt

Irgendwie hatte ich eine Szene aus einem anderem Band in diesem verortet, aber das spielte dann keine Rolle, denn eigentlich könnte ich alle Bände der Reihe wiederlesen. Mindestens zwei kommen auch noch ran, denke ich. Auf jeden Fall noch "The Lonely Silver Rain", weil darin die Story mit Puss Killian abgeschlossen wird.

Irgendwie ist es wohl so, dass dieser Band immer mein Lieblingsband der Travis-McGee-Serie sein wird. Es war das erste Buch, das ich von der Serie las und seitdem ist es auch jedesmal das erste Buch, das ich mir vornehme, wenn ich ein paar Bücher daraus wiederlesen will. Vielleicht weil es so ein guter Einstiegsband ist - Meyer vor allem kommt hier zum ersten Mal voll in Einsatz - oder weil er so genial anfängt (der erste Satz wird immer einer meiner Lieblings-Erste-Sätze bleiben) - oder weil hier niemand stirbt, der Travis nahesteht, oder oder oder.

And then one morning I went beach-walking at three o'clock and looked up just in time to see one hell of a shooting star. It really whipped across there, fast, hot and bright. I admired it. An old chunk of iron, after noodling around out there for half a billion years, had come in hot and fast at eight miles a second, and had gladdened the mind of a dreary pygmy on a starlit beach.
Suddenly I felt disgusted with myself. What the hell was the use of taking my retirement in segments whenever I could afford one if I was going to slop around and groan and finger the sad textures of my immortal soul? As opposed to the psychotic, the neurotic knows two and two make four, but he can't stand it. I admired the patience of my friends for putting up with me the last few weeks. Vidge had soured me a little, and Vangie had dropped off the bridge and accelerated the process, and then I had really put the lid on it by trapping that dumb empty punchboard into a life sentence.
Why be gloomy because the woman supply had run bad for a time? If there was any truth in averages, it had to start getting good. But it certainly wasn't going to improve if I kept spooking around like a wounded violinist. The world was good and it had been one hell of a shooting star.

John D. MacDonald, Cry Hard, Cry Fast

Schon vor 20 Jahren, als ich das Buch auch schon einige Male wiedergelesen hatte, fragte ich mich jedesmal was mich daran so faszinierte. Vermutlich ist es einfach der so geschickt gewobene Plot, der so viele und grundverschiedene Charaktere mit soviel Spannung und Drama in einem fatalen Moment zusammenbringt. Oder es ist einfach richtig gut erzählt.

John D. MacDonald, The Last One Left

Nach meiner Bücherliste ist es 12 Jahre her, dass ich zuletzt ein Buch von John D. MacDonald gelesen hab. In letzter Zeit kam er mir aber wieder stärker in den Sinn. Ich bin mir noch nicht sicher, ob ich die Travis McGee-Serie wiederlesen will - wenn dann vielleicht nur zwei oder drei Lieblingsbände - aber wollte mal einen Standalone probieren und stieß beim schmökern auf diesen Krimi über einen verzweifelten und kaltblütigen Coup, geplant und in die Wege geleitet von einer Frau - das ist vielleicht das ungewöhnlichste an dieser Story. Sehr schön fand ich auch alle Passagen mit Sergeant Corpo der sich auf seiner einsamen Insel so rührend um die schiffbrüchige Leila kümmert. Ein wenig nervten die oft breit ausgewalzten Dialoge, die schonmal fast monologhaft wirken, aber das gehörte bei MacDonald irgendwie immer dazu.

Nachdem mich der vierte Ghostbusters-Film mit seiner großartigen Homage an Egon Spengler bzw. Harold Ramis ziemlich nostalgisch stimmte (kann der erste Film wirklich schon 38! Jahre her sein?) musste ich mir natürlich die DVDs nochmal reinziehen und im Nachgang auch nochmal die Bücher vornehmen. Viele von diesen 'Büchern zum Film' sind mir nicht mehr verblieben, aber die die ich behalten habe, zählen für mich zu den besten. Bei diesen beiden, besonders dem ersten, schätze ich vor allem wie genau der respektlos-sardonische Stil der Filme getroffen wurde. Auch nach all der Zeit immer noch ein Vergnügen.
