Stuart Turton, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

Das Buch war eine Empfehlung von Regina - much obliged, dear - und machte mir schon bei ihrer Beschreibung den Mund wässrig. Und es enttäuschte nicht, auch wenn es hie und da etwas schwierig war, die ganzen Charaktere und ihre Rollen und Aussagen auf die Reihe zu bekommen (kein Wunder, dass Turton drei Jahre für das Buch brauchte). Auf jeden Fall ein absolutes Muß für Agatha Christie-Fans und auch für Leute, die gerne spekulieren. Ich für meinen Teil ging erst davon aus, dass es sich um eine Art Rollenspiel handelte, und die Auflösung am Schluß erwies sich als noch einiges komplexer und auch bestürzender.
Ich denke mal, den zweiten Band werde ich mir irgendwann auch antun. Die Leseprobe am Ende meiner Kindle-Ausgabe war schonmal ganz vielversprechend.

Oh no. Das tut jetzt richtig weh.
Sean Connery ist gestorben. Noch einer der mir schon so lange so viel bedeutete und den ich in unzähligen Filmen so sehr schätzte, so sehr, dass mir auf Anhieb kein Lieblingsfilm einfällt, denn irgendwie war er in allen so gut. Vielleicht Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Oder Time Bandits. Oder Der Name der Rose. Oder Die Unbestechlichen. Mord im Orientexpreß. Marnie. Zardoz. Robin and Marian. The First Great Train Robbery. Meteor. Outland. Das Russlandhaus. Hunt for Red October. Highlander. Prince of Thieves. Finding Forester. Und Dragonheart, wo sie es schafften, den Drachen den er sprach so vollkommen nach ihm zu gestalten, dass man sofort merkte wer es sein sollte. Und last but not least die James Bond-Filme, vor allem "Diamonds are Forever", der vermutlich der allererste Film von ihm war, den ich sah.
Es macht mich so traurig, dass es ihn nicht mehr gibt. Aber wenigstens ist er ganze 90 geworden.

Eine neue Anthologie von Lawrence Block ist immer wert gelesen zu werden, und wenn auch nur wegen seines Vorworts - bei dem er diesmal noch dazu bemerkt, dass man es getrost überspringen könnte. Die Stories sind aber auch nicht zu verachten, besonders "Requiem for a Homecoming" von David Morrell, "Alt-AC" von Warren Moore, "The Degree" von Joe R. Lansdale, "The Reasoners" von Ian Rankin, "Monkey in Residence" von Xu Xi, "The Golden Way" von Owen King und "Goon #4" von Tod Goldberg.

Over the years, I've occasionally entertained the notion of a sojourn in academia. It has long been a compelling fantasy, replete with ivy-covered walls, a book-lined study, a glowing hearth, eager students - and you can take it from there. Lisa Jewell, One-Hit Wonder

Bald gibt es von dieser Autorin auch nichts mehr, was ich nicht schon kenne, was eigentlich schade ist. Dieser Band las sich auch wieder unter der Nase weg, besonders am Anfang, als Ana die Wohnung ihrer verstorbenen Schwester räumt und beginnt zu erkennen wie anders sie war als sie dachte. Das Ende war für meinen Geschmack fast schon zu rührselig, aber eben auch sehr passend.

Maybe she was here now, a soul in limbo, watching Ana packing away her things and wondering what the fuck she was doing. Ana often had this really strange thought when famous people died untimely deaths - the thought that they didn't know that they were dead, that no one had told them. She imagined Diana on that Sunday morning in 1997, coming down for breakfast and reading the headlines, switching on the TV and seeing pictures of the mangled Mercedes in the underpass, the photos of Henri Paul, the CCTV of her and Dodi leaving the Paris Ritz and thinking no, no, no and ... Ana sighed and got to her feet. She really was a very morbid, very weird person sometimes.

".. Can I tell you the worst thing about getting old, Ana? They try and make out that ageing is all about gain - gaining experience, wisdom, happiness, all that. They're lying. Das erste der letzten drei Bücher, die mir von Lisa Jewell noch fehlen, und wieder eins von denen, die mich anrührten, auch wenn diese Serie von Mißverständnissen und verpassten Chancen mich nervös machten - ich finde Mißverständnisse, vor allem mit so weitreichenden Folgen, einfach unerträglich. An dem Happy Ending gefiel mir, dass Jewell uns das ever after erspart, dass sowieso den Erwartungen nie gerecht werden könnte.

They were about fourteen. Some looked old for their age, some looked young, but they all had that air of self-conscious desperation that Vince remembered so well from his own adolescence.
His peers had seemed so mysterious to him when he was fourteen. He couldn't have imagined what any of them were really thinking or feeling, what they really dreamed about or what they really wanted. They were each hermetically sealed against the world, hungry to taste it yet terrified to let it in in case it revealed their inherent childishness, unwordliness, uncoolness.
