Einer der Hauptgründe, warum mir der Band so gut gefällt, ist das Emaline soviel drauf hat und sich nicht verunsichern lässt, trotz oder vielleicht auch gerade wegen ihrer chaotischen Familie. Wie sie es schafft der überkandidelten Dokumentarfilm-produzentin die Leviten zu lesen, ist eine meiner Lieblingsszenen im Buch.

Diane Duane, Dark Mirror

Wenn ich Duanes Star Trek-Romane wiederlese, muss fast immer auch dieser ran. Mich beeindruckt immer wieder, wie sparsam und gleichzeitig so genau ihre Charakterisierungen sind, hier besonders Picard und Deanna Troi, und der Alien-Delfin Hwii vor allem ist immer wieder gut. Auch so ein Buch zum immer-wiederlesen.

Und der Humor ist immer wieder herrlich.

Geordi smiled at her. "Now I understand why Commander Riker's been following you around."
She blushed, and he saw the bloom of infrared quite clearly and refused to comment.
"Oh yeah?" she said quite coolly.
"Yeah. Because you like to manage... but you make it look nurturing." He grinned, and slowly, she did, too.
"What do you mean 'look nurturing'? I nurture just fine."
"Yeah," Geordi said innocently. "I heard you with the warp engines last week. 'Is Mummy's naughty little antimatter generator having a tummyache in its matter inlet conditioner? Now, now, have a nice stream of deuterium and everything will be -'"
Eileen clouted Geordi upside the head, not hard enough to unseat his visor, but hard enough to make him see stars that weren't the usual ones. "When I was finished," Eileen inquired sweetly, "did it work?"
"Absolutely it worked, would it have dared not to?" Geordi said, enthusiastic, and half-choked with laughter.

Diane Duane, Doctor's Orders

Ich brauchte mal wieder eine Pause von den Roy-Grace-Krimis und das Buch, definitiv einer der Top Five von Duanes Star Trek-Büchern bei mir, war genau richtig dafür. Obwohl schon x-mal gelesen fasziniert mich diese pure 'Was wäre wenn' Geschichte, in der der arme Doctor McCoy mal aus Jux das Kommando überlassen bekommt und sofort mit einem Trupp Klingonen und einem Orion-Piratenschiff fertigwerden muss. Interessant ist auch wie anders so ein Szenario bei einer echten Episode behandelt worden wäre und wie spannend, humorvoll, philosophisch und immer getreu der Vorlage sich die Story trotzdem - oder gerade deswegen? liest. Man merkt immer wieder, was für ein eingefleischter Star-Trek-Fan Duane ist und ich rechne es ihr als großen Verdienst an, dass sie hier ohne die ärgerlichen Streiterein zwischen Spock und McCoy auskommt. Das Buch hab ich nicht zum letzten Mal gelesen, soviel kann ich schon jetzt behaupten. Das einzig ärgerliche war, dass ich es mir nach einigem Überlegen als E-Buch lud, weil meine Taschenbuchausgabe allmählich Alterserscheinungen zeigt, und die Formatierung der Kindle-Version leider etwas zu wünschen übrig lässt. Zwei oder drei Tippfehler gabs auch. Wenn Duane ihre Star Trek Bücher auch über ihren Ebooks Direkt Store verkaufen könnte, wäre das sicher nicht passiert.

Peter James, Dead Man's Time

Im neunten Band der Serie gibt es eine beeindruckende Familiensaga, komplett mit geheimnisvollem Erbstück, einen Ausflug von Grace nach New York und mit dem "Apologist" wieder einen herrlich originellen Schergen/Bodyguard, der sich permanent für alles entschuldigt. Weil er wenn auch unbeabsichtigt Graces Baby das Leben rettet, passt es ganz gut, dass James ihn davonkommen lässt. Vielleicht sieht man sich ja mal wieder.

Diane Duane, The Landlady

In zweiten Überbrückungsgeschichte geht es um Segnbora, die sich nach zwei Generationen der Vernachlässigung als erste ihrer Familie wieder ihren Pächtern und Tributzahler annimmt und Nachforschungen anstellt, wie ihren Bedürfnissen am besten gerecht werden kann - als 'Lady of the Land' eben, wobei mir das Wortspiel im Titel immer besser gefällt. Keine besonders dramatische Geschichte, eher gemählich erzählt und mit vielen Beschreibungen des Landlebens und vor allem immer wieder der Gerichte, die unentwegt aufgetischt werden - man sollte das besser nicht hungrig lesen. Vor allem macht es Appetit auf die dritte Geschichte, deren Titel anscheinend schon feststeht, während es noch keinen Veröffentlichungstermin gibt. Da müssen wir eben abwarten.

Diane Duane, The Levin-Gad

Die erste (von vermutlich fünf) Überbrückungsgeschichte zwischen 'Door into Sunset' und dem für irgendwann in nächster Zukunft angekündigtem Door into Starlight, las sich wieder recht zügig, witzig und vor allem gegen Ende hin beim Showdown mit dem Shadow sehr dramatisch. Ich für meinen Teil hätte gerne noch etwas mehr über die übellaunige Kneipenkatze gelesen. Aber vielleicht kommt das ja noch.

Herewiss sighed. So much for being the hero of the story, he thought. That time's done. Now I have to learn to be content with being what makes other people's stories come true. The friendly beast, the creature out of legend ... I'm the Hilarwit, or Lady Ferrigan's Pook, or someone's Moonsteed or Phoenix, that helps the heroes get the job done and be 'happy till life's or times' end. And no one cares what happens to them, to the helpful magical critter, after the story's over.

Jodi Picoult, Change of Heart

Anfangs tat ich mich zugegebenermaßen etwas schwer in das Buch einzusteigen, aber nach ca. einem Drittel hatte mich die einmalige Story gepackt. Witzigerweise ging es hier auch um Transplantation, aber natürlich unter völlig anderen Gesichtspunkten - das einzige, was in beiden Geschichten am Rande angesprochen wird, sind vielleicht die Bedenken der Organempfänger einen Teil von einem fremden Menschen in sich zu haben. Picoult geht - wie immer - noch ein paar Schritte weiter, bis die Story wieder diese typische Intensität und fast unerträgliche Problematik erreicht. Das ist auch der Hauptgrund, warum ich ihre Bücher nur in längeren Abständen lesen kann, jedes für sich nimmt mich einfach zu sehr mit, so dass ich danach immer erst eine Pause brauche.
Wie fast immer bei Picoult gibt es jede Menge zitierenswerter Sätze. Vor allem wenn es um Religion geht, fühlte ich mich immer wieder angesprochen.

Here's my take on it: I don't think religions are based on lies, but I don't think they're based on truths, either. I think they come about because of what people need at the time that they need them. Like the World Series player who won't take off his lucky socks, or the mother of the sick child who believes that her baby can sleep only if she's sitting by the crib - believers need, by definition, something to believe in.

Religion gave hope to people who knew the end wasn't going to be pretty. It was why inmates started praying in prison and why patients started praying when the doctors said terminal. Religion was supposed to be a blanket drawn up to your chin to keep you warm, a promise that when it came to the end, you wouldn't die alone - but it could just as easily leave you shivering out in the cold, if what you believed became more important than the fact that you believed.

Why would God choose to inhabit any of us?
What if it was the other way around ... if we were the ones who inhabited God?

The rabbi laughed. "And you were around the first time to know this for sure?"

Some once told me that when you give birth to a daughter, you've just met the person whose hand you'll be holding the day you die.

Out of the blue I remembered the Latin words that had been combined to create religion: re + ligere. I had always assumed they translated to reconnect. It was only when I was at seminary that I learned the correct translation was to bind.
Back then, I hadn't seen a difference.

"You know why I think we still execute people? Because, even if we don't want to say it out loud - for the really heinous crimes, we want to know that there's a really heinous punishment. Simple as that. We want to bring society closer together - huddle and circle our wagons - and that means getting rid of people we think are incapable of learning a moral lesson. I guess the question is: Who gets to identify those people? Who decides what crime is so awful that the only answer is death? And what if, God forbid, they get it wrong?"
