Terry Pratchett, Soul Music

Der dritte Death-Band der Discworldreihe und zugleich der erste Band um Susan Sto-Helit rangiert auch irgendwo in den Top Ten bei mir - nicht nur, aber auch weil Pratchett hier permanent aus Blues Brothers zitiert. Und das Wesen, oder eben die Seele der Rockmusik aka Music with Rocks in so genial auf den Punkt bringt. Das letzte Wiederlesen war wirklich zu lange her.

Some religions say that the universe was started with a word, a song, a dance, a piece of music. The Listening Monks of the Ramtops have trained their hearing until they can tell the value of a playing card by listening to it, and have made it their task to listen intently to the subtle sounds of the universe to piece together, from the fossil echoes, the very first sounds.
There was certainly, they say, a very strange noise at the beginning of everything.
But the keenest ears (the ones who win most at poker), who listen to the frozen echoes in ammonites and amber, sewar they can detect some tiny sounds before that.
It sounded, they say, like someone counting: One, Two, Three, Four.
The very best one, who listened to basalt, said he thought he could make out, very faintly, some numbers that came even earlier.
When they asked him what it was, he said: 'It sounds like One, Two.'

Weiter geht's mit der Death-Serie der Discworldbücher. Bei diesem Band ist es noch länger her, dass ich ihn das letzte Mal las, und seltsamerweise hatte ich die ganze Sache mit den Schneekugeln und Einkaufswagen in einem anderen Band verortet, aber abgesehen davon konnte ich mich ziemlich gut an das Buch erinnern. Vor allem die Teile mit Death aka Bill Door und Miss Flitworth sind immer wieder schön.

Nach mehr als 10 Jahren war der erste Discworldband um Death auch schon wieder zum wiederlesen überfällig, wie auch einige andere Bücher aus der Serie. An die erste Hälfte des Buches konnte ich mich tatsächlich noch gut erinnern, danach wurde es etwas vager. Jetzt weiß ich wirklich nicht, warum ich den Band solange vernachlässigt habe, aber das letzte Wiederlesen war es bestimmt nicht. Schon die vielen, oft unübersetzbaren Wortspiele sind neben den vielen Anspielungen und wunderbaren Vergleichen wie immer ein echter Genuß.

Scientists have calculated, that the chance of anything so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one.
But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.

Lawrence Block, A Long Line of Dead Mean

Keine Ahnung warum von allen Matthew-Scudder-Bänden ausgerechnet dieser wiedergelesen werden wollte. Vielleicht weil das Konzept so ungewöhnlich ist und es kaum vorstellbar erscheint, dass Scudder es schaffen könnte den Mörder zu finden. Auch das Ende tanzt ziemlich aus der Reihe. Es fällt mir schwer, zu entscheiden welcher Band von allen mein Lieblingsband ist, aber dieser rangiert wahrscheinlich unter den Top Five.

Otfried Preußler, Krabat

Seit ich es zum ersten Mal mit 12 oder 13 las bis in die späten 20er betrachtete ich dieses Buch als mein absolutes unerreichtes Lieblingsbuch. Ein Buch, das ich garnicht mehr zu lesen brauchte, weil es sich praktisch in mein Gedächtnis eingebrannt hatte, jede Formulierung, jede Beschreibung, jede Redewendung. Und natürlich die Story, so düster und grausam und dann wieder heiter und unterhaltsam im Wechsel. Jetzt, nachdem ich den Film zufällig nochmal im Fernsehen sah (diesmal gefiel er mir ein bisschen besser), ließ mich der Gedanke es doch nochmal zu lesen nicht mehr los, und weil der Preis einigermaßen akzeptabel war, lud ich mir das Buch auf den Paperwhite. Und bereute es nicht, es war einfach wunderbar all die altvertrauten Sätze und Passagen noch einmal zu lesen bzw. zu genießen, gerade mit dem Abstand von mindestens 20 Jahren wenn nicht mehr. So manches, was ich als Teenager ohne weiteres akzeptiert hatte, machte mich heute nachdenklich, und einmal mehr begeisterte mich die solide Konstruktion und Aufteilung des Buches, die den Spannungsbogen von Anfang an aufrecht erhalten. Und ja, es ist immer noch eins meiner absoluten Lieblingsbücher.

Diane Duane, Interim Errantry 2 - On Ordeal: Mamvish fsh Wimsih

Auch beim dritten (oder vierten?) Wiederlesen verliert das Buch nicht an Zauber. Besonders schön fand ich, wie Duane die langen Perioden, in denen Vish nur unterwegs ist, mit formelhaften Wiederholungen wie im Märchen überbrückt und damit das Buch verkürzt ohne dass der Eindruck von Vishs unglaublicher Leistung verloren geht. 'And so on Vish went under the wide sky, and seasons came and went over and around her through another year and two years and five years and ten...' Immer wieder schön auch dieses Mal der Anfang, von ihrem ersten Bewußtsein bis zur Geburt/Schlupf.

Jasper Fforde, The Eyre Affair

Ich hatte das Buch schon lange mal vor oder nach dem Wiederlesen von Jane Eyre lesen wollen und jetzt endlich hat es geklappt. Prompt fielen mir dabei noch mehr Parallelen in Thursdays Leben zu dem Klassiker auf, die Fforde so subtil eingebaut hat, dass sie wirklich nur im direkten Vergleich hervorstechen. Irgendwann mal bekomme ich auch wieder Lust auf die ganze Serie - wer weiß, vielleicht noch dieses Jahr.
