Patricia Bray & Joshua Palmatier, The Modern Deity's Guide to Surviving Humanity

Wieder eine Anthologie, bei der mich hauptsächlich Tanya Huffs Beitrag reizte - "Your Three O'Clock is Here" war auch sehr vergnüglich zu lesen - aber auch die allgemeine Synopsis, wie alte Götter sich heutzutage über Wasser halten machte mich neugierig. Anubis, der als Magier seine Herzprüfung auf der Bühne als Show präsentiert, Hera als Eheberaterin, drei walisische Göttinnen Kigfa, Gowein und Arrianrhod als Rechtsberaterinnen und Leiterinnen eines Frauenhauses, Charon als Taxiunternehmer, Bastet als Leiterin einer Reproduktionsklinik, Baron Samedi als Kirmesattraktion, Baba Yaga als Restaurantbetreiberin - usw. Interessant am Rande wie in fast jeder zweiten Geschichte die Pandemie auf die eine oder andere Weise thematisiert wird.

Stephen King, The Institute

Zwischendurch ging mir der Lesestoff aus und mir war nach noch etwas von Stephen King, da traf es sich ganz gut, dass der Band schon wieder drei Jahre zurück lag, so dass er gut wiedergelesen werden konnte. Auch beim Wiederlesen war das Buch so spannend wie beim ersten Mal, und ebenso bedrückend, wie realistisch das Unvollstellbare trotzdem immer wieder wirkt.

Agatha Christie, Parker Pyne Investigates

Ich weiß nicht warum, aber irgendwie kam mir der Band mit einer der unbekannteren Serienfiguren von Christie wieder in den Sinn und wollte wiedergelesen werden. Und tatsächlich machte es auch wieder großen Spaß. Bei den "Auslands-einsätzen" scheint Pyne mit Poirot austauschbar zu sein, aber die Geschichten, in denen er von seinem Büro aus tätig wird, sind doch etwas besonderes. Und obwohl sie fast 90 Jahre alt sind, in gewisser Hinsicht zeitlos.

Sarah Dessen, This Lullaby

Einer geht noch ... Aber das ist definitiv erstmal der letzte Dessen. An den Gastauftritt von Scarlett konnte ich mich kaum erinnern und fand es nur schade, dass Grace nur erwähnt wurde. An diesem Band mag ich wie innerlich zerrissen die Protagonistin ist, auch wenn sie ihr Leben ziemlich gut im Griff hat. Hier ist die Mutter mal nicht dominierend und antagonistisch, und die Beziehung zu dem völlig gegensätzlichem Dexter kommt trotz alledem sehr realistisch rüber.

Maybe a marriage, like a life, isn't only about the Big Moments, whether they be bad or good. Maybe it's all the small things - like being guided slowly forward, surely, day after day - that stretch out to strengthen even the most tenuous bond.

Sarah Dessen, Someone like You

Merkwürdigerweise hatte ich den Handlungsfaden mit Halleys erster Liebe Macon fast komplett vergessen, aber ihre unverbrüchliche Freundschaft mit der Teenagermutter Scarlett war mir noch ganz präsent, wie auch der Konflikt mit ihrer Mutter, als sie sich langsam von ihr freistrampelt.

That was, I was sure, the destiny in store for me until the day Scarlett looked up from behind those white sunglasses and made a spot for me next to her for the rest of my life. And I was grateful. Because life is an ugly, awful place to not have a best friend.

Sarah Dessen, The Moon and More

Einer der Hauptgründe, warum mir der Band so gut gefällt, ist das Emaline soviel drauf hat und sich nicht verunsichern lässt, trotz oder vielleicht auch gerade wegen ihrer chaotischen Familie. Wie sie es schafft der überkandidelten Dokumentarfilm-produzentin die Leviten zu lesen, ist eine meiner Lieblingsszenen im Buch.

Diane Duane, Dark Mirror

Wenn ich Duanes Star Trek-Romane wiederlese, muss fast immer auch dieser ran. Mich beeindruckt immer wieder, wie sparsam und gleichzeitig so genau ihre Charakterisierungen sind, hier besonders Picard und Deanna Troi, und der Alien-Delfin Hwii vor allem ist immer wieder gut. Auch so ein Buch zum immer-wiederlesen.

Und der Humor ist immer wieder herrlich.

Geordi smiled at her. "Now I understand why Commander Riker's been following you around."
She blushed, and he saw the bloom of infrared quite clearly and refused to comment.
"Oh yeah?" she said quite coolly.
"Yeah. Because you like to manage... but you make it look nurturing." He grinned, and slowly, she did, too.
"What do you mean 'look nurturing'? I nurture just fine."
"Yeah," Geordi said innocently. "I heard you with the warp engines last week. 'Is Mummy's naughty little antimatter generator having a tummyache in its matter inlet conditioner? Now, now, have a nice stream of deuterium and everything will be -'"
Eileen clouted Geordi upside the head, not hard enough to unseat his visor, but hard enough to make him see stars that weren't the usual ones. "When I was finished," Eileen inquired sweetly, "did it work?"
"Absolutely it worked, would it have dared not to?" Geordi said, enthusiastic, and half-choked with laughter.
