Michael Connelly, Void Moon

Ich erinnere mich noch, dass ich etwas skeptisch war, als ich das Buch zum ersten Mal las, ob Connelly mit Standalones auch so überzeugen könnte. Aber mittlerweile ist dieses Buch praktisch mein Lieblingsbuch von ihm, schon zum vierten Mal wiedergelesen und kein Ende abzusehen. Irgendwie hat es alles - bzw. wird durch das, was es nicht hat, nämlich eine Nebenhandlung die von dem Hauptplot ablenkt, nur noch stärker.

Sarah Dessen, The Moon and More

Mit diesem Buch hab ich alle Romane von Dessen gelesen, außer der Kurzgeschichte - die ich mir noch ein bißchen aufspare - fehlt mir keiner mehr, bis irgendwann ein neuer kommt (hoffentlich). Und der Band hat wieder alles, was ich an Dessen schätze, der Handlungsort Colby vor allem, mit kurzen Besuchen von alten Bekannten, eine originelle und chaotische Familie und eine Story, die mich sofort wieder in das Buch einsog. An Emaline gefiel mir besonders, dass sie 'badass' ist wie Ivy sagt und sich überall durchsetzt. Jetzt hoffe ich, dass bald noch mehr von Dessen kommt.

Tana French, The Searcher

Das neueste Buch von Tana French tanzt wieder völlig aus der Reihe mit seiner Handlung im tiefsten Hinterland von Irland in einem kleinen Dorf, rund um einen Chicagoer Polizisten im Ruhestand, der dort auch wirklich seine Ruhe finden will, aber dann doch dazu gebracht wird einem Teenager nach der Suche nach dem verschollenem Bruder zu helfen. Außer dem Ex-Polizisten und einem nur beiläufig auftauchendem Provinzpolizist gibt es keine polizeilichen Ermittlungen und Hilfsmittel, alles bleibt privat und außen vor. Schon die ersten Seiten um Cals Eindrücke von seinem neuen Haus und dem Land drumherum zogen mich völlig in ihren Bann. Das Ende ist zwar bedrückend, aber letztendlich unvermeidlich.

He could walk right through those ghosts and never feel their urgent prickle.

Ian Rankin, A Song for the Dark Times

Der neueste Rebus schlug bei mir auf, als ich noch mit Constant Rabbit dran war und erwies sich wieder als echter Genuß. Hier fand ich es besonders bemerkenswert, wie Rankin es erst aussehen lässt, als würden die beiden Fälle, die Rebus oben im Norden und Siobham Clarke in Edinburgh bearbeiten zusammenhängen, nur um sie dann doch wieder zu trennen und dann beide ihre jeweiligen Mörder fast zur gleichen Zeit zu überführen zu lassen. Außerdem hatte ich bei der Nebenhandlung mit Malcolm Fox und Rafferty das Gefühl, als würde hier schon die Basis für eine Folgestory angelegt, vielleicht sogar ein endgültiger Showdown. Wer weiß.

Jasper Fforde, The Constant Rabbit

Wie zu erwarten ist Jasper Ffordes neuestes Buch keine Fortsetzung von Shades of Grey oder auch 'Early Riser', sondern wieder ein ganz neues Terrain, und die Satire darin übertrifft alles was er bis jetzt geschrieben hat, zumindest meiner Meinung nach. Selbst bei den witzigsten Stellen blieb mir das Lachen immer wieder im Hals stecken. Die Prämisse allein, dass es dank eines unerklärlichen Ereignisses in den 60ern plötzlich über nacht einige Tierarten, vornehmlich Kaninchen gibt, die über den Grad der menschlichen Intelligenz verfügen, aufrecht gehen und sprechen können und welche Veränderungen in der Gesellschaft dies nach sich zieht, ist einfach grandios beschrieben, und sehr beklemmend dazu. Da kann ich es Fforde nicht verdenken, dass Shades of Grey mal wieder hintenan gestellt wurde.

"If you really believe that is the case," said Connie, "then I think your species' somewhat strained relationship with the beneficial powers of compromise and reconciliation could also do with a reappraisal."

"Humans talk a great deal," said Doc, "and seemingly understand how they should behave - but rarely do. All that chat without positive action is nothing but hot air. It's a mystery to me how you managed to get this far without imploding. Well, pip pip!"

Terry Pratchett, The Truth

Bei diesem Wiederlesen - keine Ahnung das wievielste es war, auf jeden Fall das erste Mal auf dem Paperwhite - vermied ich es Stellen zu überspringen und las wirklich jede Seite. Und fand tatsächlich noch etwas zitierenswertes.

"Do you think I have others?" said Lord Vetinari. "My motives, as ever, are entirely transparent."
Hughnon reflected that 'entirely transparent' meant either that you could see right through them or that you couldn't see them at all.

"The city is getting rather crowded, though," said Mr Windling, who had some unspecified clerical job. "Still, at least zombies are human. No offence meant, of course."
Mr Longshaft smiled faintly as he buttered the toast, and William wondered why he always disliked people who said 'no offence meant'. Maybe it was because they found it easier to say 'no offence meant' than actually refrain from giving offence.

The curious thing was, if the breakfast table jury was anything to go by, that denying stories like this only proved that they were true. After all, no one would bother to deny something if it didn't exist, would they?

Terry Pratchett, The Last Continent

Diese Discworldversion von Australien wollte schon länger wiedergelesen werden, aber irgendwie konnte ich mich bis jetzt nie so recht aufraffen. Ich kann mich noch erinnern, dass es für mich beim ersten Lesen eine echt Erleichterung war, dass Rincewind mitsamt Luggage endlich nach Hause kommt und nicht mehr unfreiwillig in der Discworldgeschichte herumirren muss. Und wie unglaublich und gewaltig es ist als es endlich regnet. Der Schluß mit dem bunten Boomerang als Regenbogen am Himmel ist einfach zu gut.
