Sarah Dessen, Saint Anything

Die Autorin ist eine weitere Empfehlung meiner Fanfiction-Genossin. Wenn auf ihre Empfehlungen bisher nicht immer Verlaß gewesen wäre, hätte ich sie nicht probiert, weil ich mir nicht vorstellen konnte, das ein Buch für Teenager mich ansprechen könnte. Stattdessen war ich sehr überrascht, wie vernünftig und bewegend sich das Buch las, und konnte mich nach den ersten 10% kaum davon losreißen. Ein weiterer Beweis wie fatal Genre-denken und Vorurteile sein können. Von der Autorin werde ich mir sicher noch mehr Bücher vornehmen.

Tanya Huff, The Fire's Stone

Ich hatte das Buch bisher übersehen, weil ich dachte, dass es mit 'Wizard of the Grove' zusammenhängt, von dem ich nicht so begeistert war. Nachdem ich mir die Synopsis nochmal angesehen hatte, lud ich mir das Buch auf den Paperwhite und war aufs angenehmste überrascht, wie gut die Story ist - so gut, dass ich einem Tag schon bei 85% war. Und das, obwohl so vieles altbekannt wirkt und etwas vorhersehbar ist - bis dann doch eine unerwartete Wendung kommt und Huff mit neuen Ideen aufwartet. Und mittlerweile habe ich eine echte Schwäche für Quests.

Ich weiß nicht, warum ausgerechnet dieser Band der Valor/Peacekeeper-Serie wiedergelesen werden wollte - vielleicht weil es der erste Peacekeeper-Band ist. Dann hätte der Band davor mehr Sinn gemacht, weil ich während der Story doch gerne mein Gedächtnis bezüglich Alamber aufgefrischt hätte, aber das lässt sich ja noch nachholen. Ich denke mal, es ist einfach diese Story um diesen geheimnisvollen und gefährlichen Grabplaneten der H'San und die Grabräuber die Torin hier finden und eliminieren (aus der Sicht ihrer Auftraggeber) bzw. retten (aus ihrer Sicht) muss.

Thomas Harris, Hannibal

Ich brauchte ein bißchen um mich zum wiederlesen dieses Buches zu entschließen - einige Passagen, vor allem am Anfang mit Starlings Laufbahn beim FBI, fand und finde ich eher unangenehm zu lesen, und der Schluß des Buches erscheint mir immer noch unglaubwürdig, gelinde gesagt. Aber die Teile in Florenz und über Mason Verger überwogen meine Abneigung denn doch. Und es gehört einfach zu der Serie. Ich denke aber, dass ich mir 'Hannibal Rising' doch erst einmal sparen werde.

Overall, the affect was disappointing. The cell was as empty of its former occupant as a snake's shed skin. Starling thought then that she came to understand something: Death and danger do not have to come with trappings. They can come to you in the sweet breath of your beloved. Or on a sunny afternoon in a fish market with "La Macarena" playing on a boom box.

Das ist vermutlich der Band der Lecter-Serie, den ich am öftesten gelesen und am besten in Erinnerung behalten habe. Trotzdem oder gerade deswegen war das Wiederlesen eine echte Freude. Das neue Vorwort anläßlich des 25jährigen Jubiläums war noch ein extra Bonus.

We rarely get to prepare ourselves in meadows or an graveled walks; we do it on short notice in places without windows, hospital corridors, rooms like this lounge with its cracked plastic sofa and Cinzano ashtrays, where the café curtains cover blank concrete. In rooms like this, with so little time, we prepare our gestures, get them by heart so we can do them when we're frightened in the face of Doom. Starling was old enough to know that; she didn't let the room affect her.

Michael Connelly, Fair Warning

Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass einige Stammleser von Connelly enttäuscht waren, dass er Jack McEvoy für diesen Band wieder ausgrub statt weiter von Bosch und Ballard zu berichten, aber ich war ganz froh drum. Möglicherweise kommt ja auch ein neuer Bosch im Herbst. Aber es war richtig gut, wieder einen Connelly aus einer anderen Perspektive als der der Polizei - im Ruhestand oder nicht - zu lesen, und so eine gute Story noch dazu, mit einem überzeugend gefährlichem Killer und einigen brandaktuellen Themen kombiniert. Vor allem, dass Connelly das Problem mit dem Frauenhaß in den sozialen Medien aufgreift, wusste ich zu schätzen. Und wo ich bereits vorher Bedenken hatte bei der Auswertung meiner DNA werde ich es mir doppelt und dreifach überlegen, bevor ich mich darauf einlasse, so interessant es auch wäre.

Neil Gaiman, Andy Kubert, Richard Isanove, Marvel 1602

Obwohl der Comic 2004 erschienen ist und ich ihn dann oder eventuell 2005 gelesen haben muss, ist er in diesem Blog nirgendwo erwähnt, was seltsam anmutet. Auf jeden Fall diente er mir gestern als schöne Überbrückung zwischen 'Black Sunday' und dem neuesten Connelly, der erst spät abends auf meinem Paperwhite aufschlug. Ich kann mich noch erinnern, dass ich beim ersten Lesen mit mindestens der Hälfte von all den Superhelden nicht vertraut war. Mittlerweile kenne ich ein paar mehr durch die ganzen Filme, aber letztendlich spielt es keine Rolle, weil Gaiman es hier so genial schafft all diese so grundverschiedenen Helden in eine Story einzubinden und dabei immer wieder eine neue überraschende Wendung zu finden. Persönlich gefallen mir die Handlungsfäden mit den Fantastischen Vier und Stephen und Clea Strange am besten, aber gelungen sind sie eigentlich alle. Und es tat so gut, mal wieder einen Comic zu lesen.
