Joe R. Lansdale & Timothy Truman, Conan and the Songs of the Dead

Mittlerweile ist dieser einmalige Comic schon eine Standardsonntagslektüre für mich geworden, so dass ich schon fast vergass ihn hier zu erwähnen. Immer wieder einfach klasse, ich wünschte nur Lansdale könnte noch einen schreiben. Oder gleich eine ganze Serie.

Das Buch wäre als E-Book sicherlich leichter zu handhaben gewesen, aber letztendlich bin ich doch froh ein gedrucktes Exemplar zu haben, auch wenn die Taschenbuchausgabe sich allein vom Gewicht her schon ziemlich nah an der Grenze des handlichen bewegt. Die Entscheidung zwischen dem UK- und dem US-Cover fiel auch nicht gerade leicht. Schwierig war auch die Lektüre, hauptsächlich weil fast alle gesammelten Nonfiction-Texte in diesem Buch relativ kurz sind und als Einleitung, Vorwort, Nachwort, Besprechung, Artikel, Interview etc., u.ä., u.v.a. fast alle andere Bücher oder Werke behandeln, vorstellen, empfehlen und beschreiben, so dass man am Ende von der geballten Wucht der Sammlung schier erschlagen wird. Ich habe mir mindestens ein Dutzend Mal die Seite markiert, wo Gaiman dem Leser ein Werk ans Herz legt das mich jetzt auch interessiert, und ich denke, dass ich einigen davon auch tatsächlich folgen werde, sobald es mein Budget und die Zeit zulässt. Hoffe ich zumindest.

In truth, Kipling's politics are not mine. But then, it would be a poor sort of world if one were only able to read authors who expressed points of view that one agreed with entirely. Kipling was many things that I am not and I like that in my authors.

I don't think there is such a thing as a bad book for children. Every now and again it becomes fashionable among some adults to point at a subset of children's books, a genre, perhaps, or an author, and to declare them bad books, books that children should be stopped from reading. I've seen it happen over and over; Enid Blyton was declared a bad author, so was R.L. Stine, so were dozens of others. Comics have been decried as fostering illiteracy.
It's tosh. It's snobbery and it's foolishness.
There are no bad authors for children, that children like and want to read and seek out, because every child is different. They can find the stories they need to, and they bring themselves to stories. A hackneyed, worn out idea isn't hackneyed and worn out to someone encountering it for the first time. You don't discourage children from reading because you feel they are reading the wrong thing. Fiction you do not like is the gateway drug to other books you may prefer them to read. And not everyone has the same taste as you.
Well-meaning adults can easily destroy a child's love of reading: stop them reading what they enjoy, or give them worthy-but-dull books that you like, the twenty-first-century equivalents of Victorian "improving" literature. You'll wind up with a generation convinced that reading is uncool and, worse, unpleasant.

Alphonse Daudet, In the Land of Pain. Edited and translated by Julian Barnes.

Ja, ein 'richtiges' Buch, d.h. kein E-Book - hauptsächlich weil ich es mir bestellt hatte, bevor ich mir den Paperwhite zulegte und die Bestellung nachträglich nicht mehr ändern wollte. Vielleicht hätte es in elektronischer Form auch nicht die gleiche Wirkung wie das schmale, fast verletzlich wirkende Bändchen von verstreuten, an Tagebuchaufzeichnungen erinnernde Notizen von Daudet über seine Leidensgeschichte in den Jahren vor seinem Tod, denen Julian Barnes hier einen Rahmen und Hintergrund gibt, und dadurch das Buch zu einer Biografie macht. Eine kurze, aber darum nicht weniger bewegende und anrührende, genau wie die Notizen sehr kurz, aber oh so treffend und nahegehend bei allem bitteren Humor.

Are words actually any use to describe what pain (or passion, for that matter) really feels like? Words only come when everything is over, when things have calmed down. They refer only to memory, and are either powerless or untruthful.

Ja, es ist schwer zu erklären, warum Geschichten um einen Auftragskiller so faszinieren können. Am besten man versucht es garnicht erst. Sie machen einfach Spaß. Punkt.
Und ich hoffe sehr, dass Block bald noch ein paar nachliefert.

Ffordes größtes Talent - neben wirklich genialen Wortspielen - ist vermutlich die Schöpfung von ungewöhnlichen, fast bizarren und faszinierenden Welten, bei denen es schon eine Weile braucht um sich hineinzulesen. Auch hier, in dieser Utopie von größtenteils Farbblinden, in der alles, von sozialer Stellung und Funktion bis Partnerwahl und Fortpflanzung, von Farben bestimmt wird und wieviel man davon sehen kann, kostete es mich schon einige Anläufe, bis ich mich zurechtfand. Und am Schluß völlig fasziniert war und es zutiefst bedauerte, dass Fforde mit den beiden angekündigten Fortsetzungen bisher noch nicht zu Potte gekommen ist, obwohl dieser Band schon 2009 erschien. Aber sei's drum.

Die besten Wortspiele finden sich in dem Kapitel über die fast leere Bibliothek von East Carmine, unter der Leitung der guten Mrs Lapis-Lazuli (mit aufgemalter Brille)

'You see? I know where every single book used to be in the library.' She pointed to the shelf opposite. 'Over there was Catch 22, which was a hugely popular fishing book and one of a series, I believe.'
She moved swiftly to another wholly empty bookcase.
'This used to be the crime section.'
She tapped a finger at various points on the shelves and barked out the titles of books, long since extinct.
'The Most Serious Affair at Stiles'", she announced, 'Murdoch on the Orientated Ex-Best, The Glass Quay, A Missed Simile's Foaling in Snow, Gawky Park ...'
I looked across at the librarians, who were nodding to themselves as they attempted to memorise what she was saying and thus somehow perpetuate the knowledge. It seemed utterly pointless, but also, in a curious way, noble.
'... The Science of the Slams,' she continued, her pointing finger moving rapidly around the empty bookcase in a haphazard manner, 'The Pig's Leap, Monday Morning, The Force Bear, The Complete Sheer Luck Homes. Are you impressed, Master Edward?'
