Tana French, The Trespasser

Noch eine beinahe unglaublich fesselnde Geschichte von Frenchs neuem Dreamteam Conway/Moran, diesmal aus der Sicht von Antoinette Conway, die es hier schafft sich in der Murder Squad zu etablieren, nicht so sehr gegen äußere Widerstände, sondern vor allem durch Überwindung ihrer eigenen Überzeugungen und Ängste und des tiefsitzenden Verfolgungswahns. Dazu ein faszinierender Mordfall, bei dem während der Ermittlungen sich immer wieder neue Aspekte ergeben und ungewöhnliche Beziehungsgeflechte - was will man mehr. Jetzt kann ich nur hoffen, dass French das Dreamteam nochmal an den Start schickt - obwohl es schwierig sein dürfte, die beiden ersten Fälle noch zu übertreffen. Zutrauen würde ich es ihr aber.

These people are pissing me off. The neediness of it, all of them jumping up and down and waving their arms and doing their cutest little booty-shakes for the internet: Me, look at me, like me, please oh please want me!!! The because-I'm-worth-it shower (looking for someone tall, slim, very fit, no smokers, no drugs, no kids, no pets, must have full time job and own car, must like fusion cuisine, speak at least three languages, enjoy bikram yoga and acid jazz...) are just as bad: ordering their relationship from the online menu because of course you have to have one, same as you have to have a state-of-the-art sound system and a pimped-out new car, and it's important to make sure you get exactly what you want. The only ones I can respect are the ones there on business: Ukrainian superbabes looking for older men down the country, with a view to marriage. All the rest could do with a good kick up the hole and a double shot of self respect.
No one needs a relationship. What you need is the basic cop-on to figure that out, in the face of all the media bullshit screaming that you're nothing on your own and you're a dangerous freak if you disagree. The truth is, if you don't exist without someone else, you don't exist at all. And that doesn't just go for romance. I love my ma, I love my friends, I love the bones of them. If any of them wanted me to donate a kidney or crack a few heads, I'd do it, no questions asked. And if they all waved goodbye and walked out of my life tomorrow, I'd still be the same person I am today.

They make me edgy. Dozens and dozens of people, they just keep coming, and every single one of their heads is crammed with stories they believe, and stories they want to believe, and every story is battering against the thin walls of the person's skull, drilling and gnawing for its chance to escape and attack someone else, bore its way in and feed off that mind too. Even the cute little student mincing along in her flowery dress, the shuffling old fella with his shuffling spaniel, they look Ebola-lethal.

Das könnte der Band in der Serie sein, der mir, wenn nicht am besten gefiel so doch am nahesten ging, nicht nur wegen der so einfühlsam und faszinierend beschriebenen Vorgeschichte des Mordes auf dem Gelände einer Mädchenschule und dem Einblick in das besondere Beziehungsgeflecht in der Freundschaft von vier Teenagern, sondern auch das Verhältnis der beiden Ermittler, die sich im Laufe eines Tages zusammenfinden. Jetzt bin ich gespannt wie sich das neu gebildete Team im nächsten Band macht.

Michael Connelly, Two Kinds of Truth

Der letzte Bosch-Soloband stand schon länger auf meiner Wiederlesensliste, aber irgendwie bin ich nicht zu ihm gekommen bis jetzt. Und auch beim wiederlesen bleibt er unwiderstehlich spannend und überzeugt mit seinem grundsoliden Aufbau. Ein Handlungsstrang alleine hätte vielleicht schon gereicht, aber wie Bosch zwischen zwei Ermittlungen, eine davon gegen ihn selbst, hin und her gerissen wird, und sich dann am Ende, der Cold Case an dem er zu Beginn arbeitet, praktisch von selbst aufklärt, beeindruckt immer wieder.

Das dritte Buch, das ich von Heydts Webseite runterladen konnte und obwohl (oder vielleicht weil) es so anders ist als die anderen mit seiner in naher Zukunft angesiedelten Fantasygeschichte in einer Computerspielwelt im Mittelalter, mit Turnieren, Questen und ja, auch Drachen, gefiel es mir mindestens genauso gut wie die anderen, wenn nicht besser. Die "reale" Welt ist fast erschreckend glaubwürdig geschildert und der technische Standard der VR-Welten macht Sinn. Und alles schreit nach einer Fortsetzung, aber ob wir sobald erfahren wie es mit Sir Mary und Brother Greg weitergeht, ist leider ungewiß ...

Auf der Webseite mit Heydts Bibliografie stehen auch die Links für zwei weitere E-Books zur Verfügung, denen ich natürlich nicht widerstehen konnte. Das ungewöhnliche Konzept dieses Buches fesselte mich von der ersten Seite an. Natürlich gab und gibt es eine Reihe Bücher, die eine "reale" Story mit einer Fantasygeschichte verbinden, aber wie hier eine ganz normale ziemlich gestresste amerikanische Hausfrau durch die Interaktion mit Charakteren und Teilnahme an dem Geschehen in einer Fantasywelt die von einer geheimnisvollen Dunkelheit bedroht wird, ihr Leben wieder in den Griff bekommt und ungeahnte Talente entdeckt, ist einfach nur faszinierend. Dem Buch würde ich den Erfolg, den es leider nie hatte (in den 80ern geschrieben, 1990 veröffentlicht und fast sofort sang- und klanglos untergegangen) so sehr gönnen.

Das Rezept für den "Stained Glass Fruitcake" am Ende muss ich irgendwann mal ausprobieren.

Dorothy J. Heydt, The Witch of Syracuse

Nach dem langen schwelgen in den Sword & Sorceress-Bänden, wobei ich natürlich auch wieder etliche Lieblingsgeschichten aus älteren Bänden hervorkramen musste, wollten natürlich auch die ganzen Geschichten um Cynthia wiedergelesen werden und als ich noch einmal mehr nachsah, ob sie es endlich als Buch gibt, stieß ich auf diese Seite (die es natürlich schon über ein Jahr gibt ..) wo man alle Stories zusammengefasst unter dem o.g. Titel als E-Book herunterladen kann, plus einer bisher unveröffentlichen Geschichte. Und umsonst noch dazu. Das machte mich wirklich sprachlos. Und was für ein Juwel das Buch ist, und welche Freude alle Stories in einem Rutsch noch einmal durchzulesen. Ob die neue Geschichte erst kürzlich geschrieben wurde oder damals einfach nicht von Marion Zimmer Bradley für den entsprechenden Sword & Sorceress-Band (Band V) genommen werden konnte, lässt sich schwer sagen. Mir scheint die Story ein wenig aus der Reihe zu tanzen, oder vielleicht war auch die Stelle mit dem ausgesetzten Säugling nicht so recht nach MZBs Geschmack - wer weiß. Ich will's auch garnicht wissen.

Michael Connelly, Dark Sacred Night

Im neuesten Bosch-Band lässt Connelly seine neue Serienfigur Renée Ballard zusammen mit dem Polizistenveteran ermitteln - anfangs noch nebenbei, als Unterstützung bei der Recherche in einem alten Mordfall, und dann immer enger und intensiver, bis sie sich gegenseitig das Leben retten. Eine private Beziehung bleibt allerdings (erstmal) außen vor. Ein wenig drängt sich hier die Parallele zu Ian Rankins Rebus und Clarke auf und ich vermute mal, dass Connelly genau wie Rankin den Hauptfokus auf die neue Serienfigur verlagern will. Aber seis drum, das Buch ist wieder gewohnt solide aufgebaut und fesselnd von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite, ganz gleich aus welcher Perspektive. Nur darauf kommt es an.

Murder was murder, and Ballard knew that every case deserved the full attention and effort of the police department. But Ballard was always struck by the murder of a woman. Most times the cases she reviewed and worked were exceedingly violent. Most times the killers were men. There was something deeply affecting about that. Something unfair that went beyond the general unfairness of death at the hands of another. She wondered how men would live if they knew that in every moment of their lives, their size and nature made them vulnerable to the opposite sex.
