Veronica Roth, Divergent (Divergent Trilogy, Book 1)

Nachdem mir der Film gut gefallen hatte und ich herausfand, dass er stark an das Buch angelehnt ist, entschloss ich mich es auch mit dem Buch zu versuchen und bereute es nicht. Wenn überhaupt ist das Buch noch intensiver und vielleicht realistischer/detailreicher, mit mehr Hintergrund. Mit Bücher für "Young Adults" habe ich sowieso keine Probleme, wenn sie so gut geschrieben sind. Die Fortsetzung ist schon vorgemerkt, es kann gut sein, dass ich die Trilogie komplett mache - der Anfang ist schonmal vielversprechend.

Der dritte Band mit dieser unglaublichen Beschreibung des Tourismus im Cambrian Empire, in der Reisende mit einer 50%iger Sterbensrate rechnen müssen und den vielen skurrilen Eigenheiten und Gebräuchen ist immer wieder faszinierend - und überaus vergnüglich. Ich freu mich schon jetzt darauf die Serie in ein paar Jahren wiederzulesen.

Das Wiederlesen des zweiten Bandes bereitete mir genauso viel Vergnügen wie das des ersten, wenn nicht mehr, besonders das wiederentdecken von vergessenen Partien wie die versteinerten Magier und Magnificent Boos wiederaufgefundene Zeigefinger. Wie sich das tot geglaubte Quarkbeast wieder einfindet ist auch immer wieder schön.

'You can transfer your memories into inanimate objects?'
'Certainly. And the stronger you feel for something, the longer it will stick around. Some people think that objects like jewellery and paintings and vintage cars actually have a soul, but as far as we know they don't - just the memories of the people who have been around them. The more something is loved, enjoyed and valued, the stronger the memory, and the more we can read into it.'

Mein 100. Buch dieses Jahr und der erste Band der Abenteuer von Jennifer Strange machte beim Wiederlesen genauso viel Spaß wie beim ersten Mal - wenn nicht noch mehr, weil bei Fforde soviele Nuancen und Anspielungen erst beim mehrfachen Lesen auffallen. Die Unterhaltung mit Maltcassion, dem letzten Drachen, war wieder fast das Beste.

Jasper Fforde, The Great Troll War. The Last Dragonslayer Chronicles, Book 4

Leider war mir vieles aus den ersten drei Büchern der Serie nicht mehr so präsent, aber das tat dem Lesevergnügen keinen Abbruch, zumal Fforde auch viel erklärt (vielleicht als Entschuldigung dafür, dass es mit dem vierten und letzten Band der Serie so lange gedauert hat). Trotzdem denke ich, dass ich zumindest den ersten Band wiederlesen werde, weil es wieder soviel Spaß machte in diese skurrile Welt des Ununited Kingdom einzutauchen, mit den Land-Ubooten, den Trollen mit der verblüffenden Enthüllung am Schluß ihre wahre Anzahl betreffend, die Verehrung von John Nettles als Nationalhelden (allerdings nicht für Midsomer Murders sondern Bergerac) und wie Fforde sich selbst zum Schluß in die Story hineinschreibt und damit auch die Entstehungsgeschichte etabliert. Absolut fabelhaft.

Neil Gaiman, Trigger Warning

Ich weiß nicht, warum ich diese Kurzgeschichtensammlung erst jetzt wiederlas, sie war wirklich schon lange überfällig. Viele Geschichten hatte ich allerdings noch sehr gut im Gedächtnis, wie 'A Case of Death and Honey' und 'The Sleeper and the Spindle' - die Sherlock-Holmes Story, die so viel mehr als reine Nachdichtung ist, und der einmalige Blick auf ein Märchen mit Bezug auf ein zweites, oder eben 'Dornröschen meets Schneewittchen' - werden immer Favoriten bleiben. Dazu bereiteten 'A Lunar Labyrinth', 'The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains' (da sollte ich mir bei Gelegenheit auch die illustrierte Fassung nochmal ansehen), 'A Calendar of Tales' (hier besonders February, September, October, und November), 'Jerusalem', 'Nothing O'Clock', und 'Black Dog' wunderbare Wiederlesensfreuden.

Patricia Bray & Joshua Palmatier, The Modern Deity's Guide to Surviving Humanity

Wieder eine Anthologie, bei der mich hauptsächlich Tanya Huffs Beitrag reizte - "Your Three O'Clock is Here" war auch sehr vergnüglich zu lesen - aber auch die allgemeine Synopsis, wie alte Götter sich heutzutage über Wasser halten machte mich neugierig. Anubis, der als Magier seine Herzprüfung auf der Bühne als Show präsentiert, Hera als Eheberaterin, drei walisische Göttinnen Kigfa, Gowein und Arrianrhod als Rechtsberaterinnen und Leiterinnen eines Frauenhauses, Charon als Taxiunternehmer, Bastet als Leiterin einer Reproduktionsklinik, Baron Samedi als Kirmesattraktion, Baba Yaga als Restaurantbetreiberin - usw. Interessant am Rande wie in fast jeder zweiten Geschichte die Pandemie auf die eine oder andere Weise thematisiert wird.
