Lawrence Block, A Dance at the Slaughterhouse

Dieser Band mußte noch ran, danach denke ich ist es erst einmal wieder gut mit der Scudder-Serie. Am besten finde ich hier immer wie TJ seinen ersten Auftritt hat, und Block es schafft aus zwei Fällen einen zu machen, ohne dass es forciert wirkt.

What got to me some nights, though, was the way nothing changed. People back then killed ach other for every reason and for no reason and they did it with every means at their disposal and all the ingenuity they could bring to bear.
Sometimes it provided a good antidote for the morning paper, with its deadening daily chronicle of contemporary crime. It was easy to read the paper each day and conclude that humanity was infinitely worse than ever, that the world was going to hell and that hell was where we belonged. Then, when I read about men and women killing each other centuries ago for pennies or for love, I could tell myself that we weren't getting worse after all, that we were as good as we'd ever been.

Lisa Jewell, The House We Grew Up In

Auch wenn ich keinen Lesestoff gebraucht hätte, wäre das Buch längst fällig für ein Wiederlesen gewesen. Neben der Geschichte von der Messie Lorelei sind die grundverschiedenen Lebensläufe ihrer Kinder bis sie sich schließlich zum Aufräumen ihres Elternhauses treffen sehr bewegend.

I think things are so important. Pretty things. Mementoes. That's part of it all, you see, when I go into one of my shops and see that someone has given away a little china vase, say, something pretty, that someone designed, that someone created, that someone liked enough to buy, and bring into their home, it imbues that object with so much substance. So much importance. To my thinking at least. So seeing it there, in a charity shop, given away, given back to the universe, it goes against the grain. It makes me sad. So I have to buy it. To redress the balance.

Stuart Turton, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

Nach zwei Jahren hatte ich die überraschende Wendung am Schluß und die Identität des Mörders komplett vergessen, aber von dem ungewöhnlichen Plot und der Erzählweise war mir noch genug im Gedächtnis geblieben um Lust auf ein Wiederlesen dieses "time-travel, body-hopping, murder-mystery novel" zu machen. Und natürlich war es wieder ein uneingeschränktes Vergnügen, vor allem nach den vielen Christie-Büchern vorher.

Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber and other Stories

Das ist auch eines der Bücher, das ich bis vor 20 Jahren oder so sehr oft las und von dem ich fast alles noch im Kopf hatte. Besonders meine Lieblingsgeschichte Puss in Boots werde ich wohl nie vergessen (und noch einige Male lesen). Einige andere Stories, wie The Courtship of Mr Lyon, beeindruckten mich hier noch stärker als früher, und vor allem die Titelstory war jetzt wie damals ein wunderbar gruseliges Vergnügen.

Agatha Christie, Postern of Fate

Von dem letzten Tommy & Tuppence-Buch (gleichzeitig auch das letzte Buch von Agatha Christie), hatte ich eigentlich nur noch in Erinnerung, dass er ziemlich verwickelt und nicht sehr spannend war. Von der Handlung hatte ich garnichts mehr im Kopf, und das bewog mich es nochmal zu versuchen. Und ja, es ist immer noch verwickelt, und vieles wiederholt sich, aber es ist doch spannender als ich dachte, vor allem gegen Ende hin. Einzig die vielen vielen Andeutungen und vagen Hinweise nerven ein wenig. Überraschend fand ich wie sehr der Common Market, der später zur EU wurde, hier befürwortet wird und wie Christie damals schon die Probleme voraussah. Sehr schön ist auch der Teil, in dem Tuppence von all den Kinderbüchern schwärmt und wiederlesen will. Einzig ein bißchen unbefriedigend ist, dass der Mörder von dem alten Isaac nicht überführt wird, aber man kann wohl nicht alles haben ...

Agatha Christie, By the Pricking of my Thumbs

Weil das eines meiner Lieblingsbücher von Christie ist - und für mich definitiv das Beste von der Tommy & Tuppence-Reihe - war mir noch sehr viel davon im Gedächtnis geblieben, nur der Teil, nachdem Tuppence das Haus auf dem Bild glücklich gefunden hat (allein die Suche ist fabelhaft beschrieben) war ein bißchen vage. Wieder ein Buch mit dieser typischen unerwarteten Wendung, die im Nachhinein so offensichtlich erscheint. Und je älter ich werde, desto mehr erkenne ich mich in Tuppence wieder - allerdings fand ich sie und Tommy und ihre humor- und liebevolle Beziehung schon mit Ende Zwanzig klasse.

Agatha Christie, A Pocketful of Rye

Auch hier konnte ich mich an kaum mehr erinnern, als daß ich das Buch einmal gelesen hatte. Im Gedächtnis geblieben ist mir nur die arme Typistin im Büro des Mordopfers, die keinen Tee mit kochendem Wasser zustande bringt und Miss Marples Entrüstung, dass dem armen ermordeten Hausmädchen auch noch eine Wäscheklammer auf die Nase gesetzt wurde. Bei der Identität des Mörders lag ich diesmal ziemlich falsch, bzw. fiel voll auf einen der Red Herrings herein, den Christie so gerne verwendete.

Miss Marple agreed that it was very different for a man. She could say this without a qualm as it was what she really believed. 'The gentlemen' were, in Miss Marple's mind, in a totally different category to her own sex. They required two eggs plus bacon for breakfast, three good nourishing meals a day and were never to be contradicted or argued with before dinner.
