Jasper Fforde, First among Sequels (Thursday Next 5)

Technisch gesehen ist es der sechste Band, aber da der ursprüngliche fünfte Band in diesem wieder aufgelöst wird, nachdem Thursday ihr literarisches Alter Ego besiegt hat, kann 'The great Samuel Pepys Fiasco' wohl nicht berücksichtigt werden. Soviele geniale Stellen wieder in dem Buch, in dem Thursday, mittlerweile Mutter von zwei realen und einem fiktiven Teenager, nach einer wohl verdienten Pause in neue atemberaubende Verwicklungen gestürzt wird. Mycroft als Geist, die Auflösung der ChronoGuards, die zwei so unterschiedlichen fiktiven Thursdays - Nr. 1-4 und 5 - der Käseschmuggel, das Wiedersehen mit der Goliath Corporation und die Strandung auf der Moral Dilemma, und zu guter letzt der Cliffhanger mit der Bookworldversion eines 'Serienkillers', das alles ist einfach immer wieder gut zu lesen.

Reading, I had learned, was as creative a process as writing, sometimes more so. When we read of the dying rays of the setting sun or the boom and swish of the incoming tide, we should reserve as much praise for ourselves as for the author. After all, the reader is doing all the work - the writer may have died long ago.

There was a distant hum and a rumble as the reading approached, a light buzz in the air like static and an increased heightening of the senses as the reader took up the descriptive power of the book, and translated it into his or her own unique interpretation of the events - channelled from here through the massive ImaginoTransference storycode engines back at Text Grand Central and into their imagination. It was a technology of almost incalculable complexity which I was yet to fully understand. But the beauty of the whole process was taht the reader in the Outland never suspected there was any sort of process at all - the act of reading was to most people, myself included, as natural as breathing.

When you tell a tragic story, someone dies for real in the BookWorld. I was in the Oral Tradition. Potentially the best storytelling there was - and the most destructive.

I'd visited enough poetry to know that it's an emotionally draining place and on a completely different level. Whereas story is processed in the mind in a straightforward manner, poetry bypasses rational thought and goes straight to the limbic system and lights it up like a brushfire.

Jasper Fforde, The Well of Lost Plots (Thursday Next 3)

Eigentlich wartet der neue Logan McRae-Band von Stuart MacBride seit Ende Mai auf meinem Paperwhite, aber nach den ersten drei Bänden muss ich doch noch den vierten dranhängen - die längere Pause zwischen Band 4 und 5 eignet sich einfach besser um ein anderes Buch dazwischen zu schieben, und ich möchte erst einmal Thursday und Landen wiedervereint wissen. Dieser Band las sich wie jedesmal höchst unterhaltsam, aber auch oft bestürzend, vor allem Miss Havishams Ende stimmt einfach nur traurig.

'Well,' I sighed, trying to get my head around this idea, 'I had always thought novels were just, well, written.'
'Write is only the word we use to describe the recording process,' replied Snell as we walked along. 'The Well of Lost Plots is where we interface the writer's imagination with the characters and the plots so that it will make sense in the reader's mind. After all, reading is arguably a far more creative and imaginative process than writing; when the reader creates emotion in their head, or the colours of the sky during the setting sun, or the smell of a warm summer's breeze on their face, they should reserve as much praise for themselves as they do for the writer - perhaps more.'
This was a new approach; I ran the idea around in my head.
'Really?' I replied, slightly doubtfully.
'Of course!' Snell laughed. 'Surf pounding the shingle wouldn't mean diddly unless you'd seen the waves cascade on to the foreshore, or felt the breakes tremble the beach beneath your feet, now, would it?'
'I suppose not.'
'Books,' said Snell, 'are a kind of magic.'

Jasper Fforde, Lost in a good Book (Thursday Next Series 2)

Mit diesem Band etabliert sich die Serie erst richtig, mit Miss Havisham, die Thursday unter ihre Fittiche nimmt und deren erste Aktionen in der Parallelwelt der Bücher. Vielleicht sogar der beste Band der Serie. Auf jeden Fall hat er eine richtig nette Widmung, über die ich mich jedesmal wieder freue:

Lawrence Block, Hitman, Keller's Fedora

Eigentlich hatte ich beim Wiederlesen der Kellerbücher diese beiden - den ersten und den bislang letzten Band - auslassen wollen, aber dann kam ich irgendwie doch nicht drumrum. Und warum auch nicht.

He unpacked, showered, and went to the window to look at the sunset. It was the sort of sunset a hero would ride off into, leaving a slender blonde to bite back tears while calling after him, "I hope you enjoyed your stay with us, Mr. Whitlock."
Stop it, he told himself. Stay with reality. You've flown a couple of thousand miles to kill a man you never met. Just get it done. The sunset can wait.

Stephen King & Peter Straub, Black House

Doch fast eine Woche, immerhin. Das Buch hatte sich nicht so fest eingeprägt wie 'The Talisman', aber ich erkannte etliche Passagen wieder, manche kamen mir sogar kürzer vor oder leicht anders als in meiner Erinnerung. Nur die richtig verstörenden Teile im Showdown, u.a. Henrys Ende (warum müssen immer die besten Charaktere draufgehen?) hatte ich wohl verdrängt, zumindest war mir davon fast garnichts mehr präsent.

What an extraordinary moment; he is laughin while he rubs tears off his face. The paradox suddenly makes him feel as though he is being torn in half. Beauty and terror, beauty and pain - there is no way out of the conundrum. Exhausted, strung out, Jack cannot hold off his awareness of the world's essential fragility, its constant, unstoppable movement toward death, or the deeper awareness that in that movement lies the source of all its meaning. Do you see all this heartstopping beauty? Look closely, because in a moment your heart will stop.
In the next second, he remembers the swarm of golden bees that descended upon him: it was against this that they comforted him, exactly this, he tells himself. The blessing of blessings that vanish. What you love, you must love all the harder because someday it will be gone. It felt true, but it did not feel like all of the truth.

Lawrence Block, Everybody Dies

Vielleicht das Buch mit den meisten Toten darin, und das bei dem ich mir vom Titel her merken kann, worum es geht. Richtig leid tut es mir nur um Jim Faber und die Art wie er getötet wird. Wenigstens passiert TJ und Mick Ballou nichts, und das ist die Hauptsache.

"Ah, 'tis a terrible old song, but it gives you an idea how our people felt on the subject. A great tradition of hating the informer. And of course you know what that means."
"What?"
"A great tradition of informing," he said. "For how could you have the one without the other?"

Tana French, The Wych Elm

Ich hatte anfangs keine besonders hohen Erwartungen an das Buch, vielleicht auch weil es sich für meine Mutter zu sehr zog, und war dann als ich es endlich anfing zu lesen wirklich angenehm überrascht. Natürlich darüber, wie vielschichtig die Geschichte war, aber das war bei Tana French nur zu erwarten, und dann auch, wie sie es schafft immer dann, wenn man es nicht mehr erwartet, noch einen draufzusetzen. Ich hatte schon erwartet, dass das Buch nach der letzten Aussprache der drei Cousins zum Ende hätte kommen müssen, die Abschlußgeschichte fühlte sich fast wie ein Bonus an. Und viele Aspekte in der Geschichte gingen mir richtig unter die Haut, allein der Gedanke wie jemand zehn Jahre mit einer Leiche im Garten leben konnte - noch dazu so ein lieber Mensch wie Hugo (so liebenswerte Charaktere hat French wirklich selten) - ließ mich schaudern, und dass diese Absurdität hier völlig plausibel erscheint. Und nein, mir war das Buch nicht zu lang.
