Der siebte Band ist wieder besonders bitter für Logan, weil Samantha durch den Brandanschlag auf seine Wohnung im Koma endet. Ab dem achten Band kommuniziert er nur in seinem Kopf mit ihr - wie MacBride den Leser bis zum letzten Drittel des Bandes darüber im Unklaren lässt, ob sie nicht doch wiederhergestellt wurde, ist schon ziemlich raffiniert (und fies) beschrieben. Zu allem Überfluss bekommt er es mit Hexenwahn zu tun, als hätte er nicht schon genug Probleme. Aber gegen Ende des achten Bandes kommt Ctulhu in sein Leben. Wenigstens etwas.

I've been stabbed, shot at, blown up, made to eat human flesh,' Logan held up his left hand and showed her the two thin scars in the palm, 'someone nailed my hand to the floor with a nail-gun, then tried to do the same with my head. Someone else set fire to my flat with me in it. My girlfriend's still in the hospital after that one...' ...'So yes: they sent me for therapy. It was either that or be invalided out.'

Stuart MacBride, All that's Dead

Im vorletzten Logan McRae-Band, nach dem MacBride eine Pause in der Serie machte, geht es mal nicht um Serienmörder oder Pädophile, sondern um die dunkle Seite der Unabhängigkeitsbewegung, die in offenen Terror und Rassismus ausartet. Alles wieder von Anfang bis Ende voller haarsträubender und makabrer Szenen, bei denen man schier verzweifeln möchte, bis es dann doch am Schluss ein einigermaßen gutes Ende nimmt. Immer wieder gut zu lesen, und jetzt überlege ich doch ob ich die ganze Serie noch einmal lesen soll. Vielleicht nur von Band 4 an, aber mal schaun.
Und trotz der üblichen gruseligen Szenen machen einige Passagen - wie immer - echt Appetit. Ah, schottisches Fastfood, immer so liebevoll beschrieben...

Logan took a bite of pickled onion, chasing it down with a nugget of crispy batter. Whoever invented fish suppers was a genius. Sod haggis, this was Scotland's proper national dish, not some unmentionable mush of sheep innards stuffed into another bit of sheep innards, with four tons of herbs and spices added so you didn't have to taste what you were actually eating.
Haddock plus batter plus potatoes, plus salt, plus vinegar, equals genius.

A contemptuous snort from King. 'You Unionistas are all the same.'
'Hoy! I voted "Yes", thank you very much! Unionistas, my sharny arse!'
'Then why are you so anti-independence?'
'I'm no' anti-independence, I'm anti-people-being-dicks-about-it. I'm anti-harrassment. Anti-burning-people's-houses-down. Anti-blowing-stuff-up. Anti-hating-people-just-because-they're-English!'
Pause.
'Oh. That's OK then.'

Stuart MacBride, In the Cold Dark Ground

Ein paar Logan-McRae-Bände müssen noch sein, und diesen könnte ich immer wieder lesen, so haarsträubend all die schlimmen Sachen, die den armen Logan heimsuchen, auch sind - hier bleibt ihm wirklich garnichts erspart. Besonders die Szene, in der Samanthas Lebenserhaltungssysteme abgeschaltet werden, ist immer so herzbrechend beschrieben. Wenigstens hat er (noch) DCI Steel an der Seite, so nervend sie auch ist, und mit Cthulhu eine wirklich süße Katze. Immerhin.

Why was it never like this in the books or movies? The hero gets attacked, the hero kills the attacker, throws out a smart one-liner, and moves on. They never looked like someone had carved a hole in their chest and filled it with frozen gravel.

Stuart MacBride, A Dark so Deadly

Auch beim zweiten Wiederlesen und obwohl ich noch wußte wer der Mörder war, faszinierte der Oldcastle-Standalone aufs Neue, vor allem gegen Schluss, wo der geschundene Callum McGregor endlich fast aus seiner Misere heraus ist und im Misfit Mob von Oldcastle seine verdiente Anerkennung findet. Ich schenkte mir die Rückblicke in die Kindheit des Mörders diesmal weitgehend und konzentrierte mich auf die Gegenwart, die wieder so spannend war, dass ich das Buch kaum weglegen mochte. Und natürlich herrlich abgedreht und urschottisch-schwarzhumorig wie immer.

'Wow.' Callum frowned out at the acres and acres of black-plastic bags. Suppose it wasn't that surprising the tip was hoaching with corpses - if you had to dispose of a body, where better than here? Clearly the city's criminal element didn't approve of littering.

'I get it: your boyfriend, Mark, is a dick who thinks whatever he wants is more important than what you want.' The houses were getting bigger with every street. 'And do you know why he thinks that?'
Franklin scowled straight ahead, mouth clamped shut.
'Because he's a dick.' Callum turned in his seat. 'And do you know what? He's a merchant banker - that was your clue, right there. Take a left at the roundabout and it should be about halfway down.'
'He wasn't a dick when I met him.'
'Yeah, well, you know the old saying: some men are born dicks, some have dickishness thrust upon them, and some achieve dickosity all on their own.' He gave her a smile. 'I'm paraphrasing a bit.'

Tanya Huff, The Second Summoning

Weil grade ein neuer Stuart MacBride auf meinem Paperwhite eingetrudelt ist, verzichte ich erstmal auf den dritten Band, aber der zweite Band musste doch sein, schon weil es immer wieder schön ist Claire und Dean bei den ersten Stolpersteinen in ihrer Beziehung zu begleiten. Auch wenn Hells Kommentare fehlen, dafür ist Austin in Bestform.

Dean, who followed Claire don the stairs only because she held both handrails, refusing to let him by, seemed like the kind of guy who could be depended on to open the door seven or eigth times an hour and pass down a sausage or two to keep a cat from starving.

Tanya Huff, Summon the Keeper

Ähnlich wie bei Terry Pratchett habe ich bei Tanya Huff auch Bücher, die ich niemals müde werde wiederzulesen. Vor allem wie Claire Hansen, die als Keeper gewohnt ist ständig auf Achse zu sein um Löcher im Raumzeitgefüge zu flicken auf einmal gezwungen ist für mehrere Wochen ein Hotel über einer Öffnung zur Hölle zu betreiben und dabei einen einsamen Geist, eine aufdringliche Nachbarin, einen Fahrstuhl in andere Dimensionen und eine zum Bösen gewechselten Keeper in Schlafstarre unter Kontrolle zu halten ist immer wieder absolut genial. Hells ständige Kommentare runden alles perfekt ab.

Stuart Turton, The Devil and the Dark Water

Ansich liegen mir historische Romane nicht besonders, aber hier ist völlig faszinierend, wie Turton den klassischen Whodunnit auf den Kopf stellt und vor allem wie am Schluß nach der Auflösung ein ganz ungewohnter Ausgang aufgezeigt wird. Wenigstens wird die ungeschriebene, vor allem von Agatha Christie bekannte Regel, dass der unwahrscheinlichste Charakter sich als Täter erweist, hier beibehalten. Und ich muss leider zugeben, bis zum Schluss fiel es mir sehr schwer nicht an übernatürliche Phänomene und gar den Teufel zu glauben, so überzeugend war alles beschrieben...

This was a merchant vessel flying United East India Company colours, which meant profit went before every other consideration. It wouldn't matter if the ship made it back to Amsterdam if the cargo had spoilt, or if the trade at the Cape had been handled badly. The Saardam could drift into port full of bodies and the Gentlemen 17 would still call it a success so long as the spices weren't damp.
